St. Joachim’s

The earliest reference of Sunday Mass being said in Hampden Park is in 1913 held in a house. This continued for very many years with increasing evidence that a church should be built.

After WWII, Canon Corbalis, through a series of fund-raising efforts, was able to negotiate the purchase of Hastings Villas at 106 Brodrick Road as the site for a church. The sale was completed in 1953.

In 1958 Fr. John Flanagan was appointed priest and took up residence in the house which in the early days was derelict and unfurnished.

Work started on the church in 1959 and in June 1960 Bishop Cowderoy blessed the church and proclaimed the parish independent from Our Lady of Ransom. 5 years later in 1965 Polegate & Willindon were separated from Hampden Park with Fr. Flanagan moving there and being succeeded by Fr. David Scott. Fr. William Bradley followed in 1973.

In 1999 Hampden Park was once again joined with Polegate with Fr. Kieran Gardiner as priest of both parishes. This continued until Fr. Gardiner was transferred away from Eastbourne. Our present priest, Fr. Barry Anderson, became priest-in-charge in addition to being Dean of Eastbourne and parish priest of Christ the King with The Holy Rood.
