Finance & Building Maintenance Committees
These groups monitor the finances of the parishes and condition of the buildings. Our parishes have to be self-supporting. Our weekly giving, strengthened by fundraising activities and occasionally by legacies, has to cover all running costs, repairs and new work. We also have to support the parish schools and central Diocesan functions.
In the last 15 years you have responded excellently to ensure that the parishes had sufficient funds to meet general expenditure needs as well as to maintain and improve the facilities at each church. We must not be complacent, however. Like all households the costs of running our churches and its facilities has increased significantly of late - gas, electricity, water prices, and so on have all increased well beyond any increase in the level of weekly giving.
To meet the demands for operating the churches, and the financial needs of the pastoral care of the parish we must have confidence in the ongoing levels of giving in our parishes. Think about this. Can you give a little more? Has your pay gone up since you last increased your giving? Have you Gift Aided your giving? Have you thought about Planned Giving?
Although you must make your own decision, the late Cardinal Basil Hume's guidelines still hold good:

For those in employment: One hour's pay per week to your parish
For the retired: One fortieth of weekly income
For the rest: Anything you can afford
