St Richard’s is a co-educational Catholic college offering a Christian education to pupils of all abilities from the ages of 11 to 16 years. The aim is to encourage and develop every pupil in its care academically, socially and spiritually.

The college has high academic standards, as the GCSE and SATs results testify. The college expects pupils to work hard, behave well and pursue excellence in all that they do. The college also aims to provide a happy, caring and safe environment in which pupils can learn and develop into rounded, responsible members of the community.

St Richard's Catholic College seeks to foster a commitment to genuine Christian values; to provide an experience of a living, worshipping community, and to develop a fully rounded curriculum that encourages all to challenge and serve a society that is religiously, racially and culturally diverse. The college community endeavours to create an atmosphere of order, discipline and respect in which pupils can feel secure and have a sense of purpose and to provide a system of care in which the staff can be seen to have, at heart, the interest of the pupils within their care.

The college sees this as being fundamental to what it, as a college community, seeks for the pupils, which is:

  • To help all pupils to recognise and develop their talents and abilities to their full potential, for personal fulfilment and success in all aspects of Christian adult life.
  • To foster personal and moral attitudes helpful to the well being of a just and caring society.
  • To work for self-discipline, self-control, self-motivation and self-confidence in all pupils.
  • To create pleasure in learning and recognition of the value of education's continuing role throughout one's life.
  • To create a happy, lively and purposeful Christian community which offers all its members support, encouragement and a breadth of shared experiences and achievements.
  • To recognise and develop the essential relationship with the home and parish if all other aims are to be achieved.

Its efforts have not gone unnoticed. The Government has named St Richard's as an example of Good Practice and awarded us Leading Edge Status. The college is also a Specialist Science college with High Performing Specialist School status and it has International School status, and Fairtrade status as well as Gifted and Talented status.

All children are unique and precious individuals with different talents and aspirations, and the college’s efforts are directed into ensuring that they feel both valued and challenged.

Parents choose to send their children to St Richard's because they want them to be educated in the Catholic faith. The college has an active and vibrant religious life and it is lucky to be supported in that by local clergy and a Chaplaincy team. They regularly visit the college and are always available to provide advice and practical help for pupils, teachers and parents. The college has a full-time Lay Chaplain to enhance this area of school life.

The school day begins and ends with a prayer or reflection. The college holds daily assemblies and encourage pupils to participate through preparing and presenting themes or by providing music for the hymns. Regular masses are held and it has a chapel within the college where pupils can pray alone or in a group. The college also run retreat days and residential weekends designed for contemplation and deepening of faith. Pilgrimages are organised to Lourdes and Rome and there is a full day visit to the seminary at Wonersh.

A pupil liturgy team enables pupils to make an impact on how they feel the spiritual and liturgical life of the college should develop.

The college strongly encourages parents to participate in college and community religious activities to support their child and show by example how to be a committed Christian.
